The AI War of Google Gemini vs ChatGPT
Gemini: The Game Changer
In the great AI war of 2023, Google found itself on the losing side against Microsoft's blitzk attack. GPT 4, Microsoft's artificial intelligence model, captured the essence of the AI age that we had just entered. The defeat was so severe that people started using Bing, the search engine owned by Microsoft, unironically. However, Google wasn't going to give up that easily. They recently unveiled their highly anticipated Gemini model, which outperforms GPT 4 in almost every benchmark.
Introducing Gemini
Gemini, also known as Gemini Multimodal Large Language Model, is the latest creation from Google. It is designed to replace Lambda and Palm 2, just like GPT 4. Gemini is not just trained on text, but also on sound, images, and video. Its capabilities are truly mind-blowing. For example, Gemini can analyze a video feed in real-time and provide accurate responses. It can even recognize objects, like a duck, as shown in one of Google's mind-boggling demos. Gemini is also capable of tracking objects in an ongoing video feed, playing games, and generating images and music based on prompts.
Logic and Spatial Reasoning
Gemini is not limited to just understanding language and visuals. It also excels at logic and spatial reasoning. For instance, it can predict which car will go faster based on the aerodynamics of the vehicle. In the future, a civil engineer could simply take a picture of a piece of land, and Gemini would instantly generate blueprints for a bridge. This advancement not only impacts software engineers but also opens up new possibilities for other engineering fields.
Alpha Code 2: A Programmer's Nightmare
On top of Gemini, Google also introduced Alpha Code 2, a groundbreaking tool for programmers. Alpha Code 2 can outperform 90% of competitive programmers in solving highly complex abstract problems. It breaks down problems into smaller ones using techniques like dynamic programming. With Alpha Code 2, even the most challenging coding competitions, like those found on Code Forces, become less intimidating.
The Reality Behind the Hype
While all these demos appear mesmerizing, it's essential to examine the reality behind the marketing slides. Gemini comes in three sizes: Tall, Grande, and Ventti. The smallest version is designed to be embedded in Android phones, while the Pro version is more versatile. However, it's the Ultra version that truly stands out and has everyone talking. Unfortunately, Gemini Ultra is not yet available, as it is undergoing additional safety tests to reach 100% on the hell woke benchmark.
Benchmark Battles: Gemini vs. GPT 4
When comparing Gemini to GPT 4, Gemini Pro underperforms in most situations. However, Gemini Ultra outperforms GPT 4 in almost every category. Notably, it is the first model to surpass human experts in massive multitask language understanding, a test similar to the SATs for AI. Yet, there is cause for concern. Gemini Ultra falls short when it comes to the hell swag benchmark, which evaluates common sense natural language processing. This benchmark assesses an AI's ability to complete a sentence with vague and ambiguous information, a task that humans find relatively easy. The fact that GPT 4 performs better on this benchmark is worrying.
The Technical Marvel of Gemini
The technical paper accompanying Gemini provides insight into the training process. Google used their newly unveiled version 5 tensor processing units (TPUs) in super PODS with 4,096 chips each. The TPUs are equipped with dedicated optical switches, enabling fast data transfer between pods. They can also reconfigure into 3D tourist topologies, reducing latency. Due to the enormous scale of Gemini Ultra, communication between multiple data centers was necessary. Training data for Gemini includes web pages, YouTube videos, scientific papers, and books, which are refined for quality using reinforcement learning through human feedback.
Final Thoughts
Gemini is undoubtedly a remarkable achievement, but its true potential is yet to be fully realized. The Nano and Pro models will be available on Google Cloud starting December 13th. As for Gemini Ultra, we will have to wait until next year for it to undergo additional safety tests. Despite its flaws, Gemini represents a significant step forward in the world of AI and opens up new possibilities in various fields. The AI war of 2023 may have been a setback for Google, but with Gemini, they are ready to reclaim their title in the ongoing battle for AI supremacy.
